22-day ban ends, hilsa returns to Chattogram's Fishery Ghat as boats come back and the market stirs again
Hilsa began arriving at Fishery Ghat in Chattogram the moment the 22-day fishing ban ended. On the first day after the restriction was lifted, fishermen's boats returned to the landing with their catch, and hilsa was unloaded from nets and baskets. From early morning, fishermen, wholesale traders, brokerage clerks and labourers gathered at the ghat. The fish was sorted, then packed in ice, and finally filled into baskets and styrofoam boxes for dispatch to different parts of the country. Sorting, weighing, icing and packing continued through the day. The entire sequence belongs to the first day after the ban ended, and that is precisely where its news value lies.
The work at the ghat followed a fixed order. After the fish was unloaded from the boats, it was separated by size. Larger hilsa was kept apart from smaller hilsa, because demand and price differ for the two. The fish was then preserved between layers of ice so that it would not spoil before reaching distant markets. Finally it was sealed into baskets and foam boxes. Workers could be seen carrying boxes, adding ice and arranging baskets. During the ban the ghat stays almost empty, and on the first day the bustle returned that this market is known for.
Hilsa is regarded as Bangladesh's national fish and also holds geographical indication, or GI, status. Every year, during the breeding and growth season, fishing of hilsa and of jatka — the juveniles of the species — is suspended for a set period. The purpose is clear: to protect the stock and keep the next generation out of the nets. This time the restriction ran for 22 days, and this arrival at Fishery Ghat was recorded on the first day after it lapsed. That background matters, because the ban is not a sudden disruption but a planned conservation measure — and without it the ban reads as nothing more than an empty gap.
However, the material on which this report is based contains no figure for the total volume or weight of hilsa landed at the ghat, the number of boats, the number of workers present, or wholesale and retail prices. Without those numbers it cannot be said whether this landing was larger, smaller or level with previous years. Statements that the market came alive again sound true, but they do not complete the picture without a tonnage figure. Nor is it clear how many areas the 22-day ban covered and how compliance was enforced.
The absence of any wholesale or retail price is the single biggest gap, because in any landing-day story the first thing a reader wants to know is what the fish is selling for. Prices also reveal how much the fisherman is getting and how large the middleman's share is. In the information available this time there is no price, no wage figure, and no named fisherman or trader, let alone a quote. Only one person is named in the entire report — the photographer who shot the images, Jewel Shill.
The report says the fish was sent to different parts of the country, but it does not say which cities, which markets or by what route. Nor does it say who arranged transport, how many vehicles were deployed, or when the fish would arrive. That information matters because hilsa spoils quickly, and even an hour's delay anywhere between the ice and the truck affects the price. The availability and cost of ice is another input that feeds directly into the fish's price.
The report is equally silent on the economic condition of the people at the ghat. A 22-day ban means three weeks of shutdown for households that live off the daily catch. Fishermen and labourers have no alternative work during that period. So behind the bustle of the first day after the ban lies a long break as well, and this report does not make clear whether policy design accounts for it.
It is also worth noting that the story is built around photographs. The original material consists of a single paragraph of text followed by eight images, numbered one of eight through eight of eight. In other words, this is a purely visual dispatch, in which the photographs serve as the evidence and the text was written around them. That establishes with confidence that hilsa did reach the ghat that day, was sorted, iced and packed — but any larger claim needs additional reporting.
In terms of time, the story is extremely perishable. Its entire value rests on the phrase first day. Within days the claim will be stale, and it will then be hard to establish which date the landing belonged to, because the available material records neither a publication date nor a landing date. Without a date the report can neither be filed correctly in an archive nor compared against figures from previous years.
Despite these gaps, the story has one solid core: it documented the first link of the hilsa supply chain within a single day — from boat to ghat, from ghat to ice, and from ice to box. That is the link where fish acquires a market price for the first time. And that is why the first day at Fishery Ghat after a ban lifts is always news, even when nobody has the numbers for that day's volume or price.
